Blog Post #13

What Did I Leave Out?
For this blog post, I've listed a few things that I think should be taught in our schools today.

This week we were assigned to do a blog post on what we believe should have included in our class assignments. Here's what I came up with,  as for me and my students. something, that I would highly enforce in my classroom is learning how to write legibly and writing in cursive. More so important writing so that people can actually read what the student is trying to say. You would be surprised how many adults here today actually do  not know how to write, spell or less known write their name in cursive.  Since I've been attending South Alabama I've heard the saying "please write so that I can read your hand writing at least 100 times this semester. Were all focusing so much on the use of technology till where at the point now we've forgot about the old fashioned ways. Since we are all grown and in college now, professors assume that we as students know these things but some people actually don't. Cursive handwriting is something that seems to me has just completely disappeared within the public school system and I personally think we as future educators should bring it back into our school systems.

After watching the video Assistive Technologies for Vision and Hearing Impaired Children, I found it to be very interesting to me. For one seeing how the teachers were active with helping their students really touched a soft spot. Patience is something that we as future educators must endure.

Using some forms of technology can really benefit children and help them develop several different learning skills. Teaching Math to the Blind, was a very inspirational video on teaching students with hearing and vision disabilities. It helps these students with beginning algebra and much more. Another video was The Mountbatten, and I learned so many cool things about this piece of technology. This very unique tool can do almost anything your normal desktop could do.

Blog Post #11

After watching all 6 videos, I've come to conclusion that the one I really liked the most would
have to be BACK TO THE FUTURE by Brian Crosby. I think he had some really cool ideas for projects. The hot air balloon project was one I really found interesting. Not only did the students learn but they had the ability to use technology while doing it. In today's world, just about everything involves the use of some technology and allowing the kids to use it a very young age I think is a really great idea.

In Blended Learning Cycle, Paul Anderson talked about the process of blended learning together which is the compelling design of mobile, online and classroom. He also uses the acronym Q.U.I.V.E.R.S which is his way of remembering the blended learning cycle. This simply stands for Questions, Investigation, Video, Elaboration, Review and Summary quiz.

In the next video, Making Thinking VisibleMark Church had his students to watch a video about early human beginnings. Then the Students would have to come up with a headline that tells you what he or she learned.  Later the Students worked together to come up with this phrase and write them down. Last they all were told to hang up their headlines and two weeks later to go back and look and them and see if anything had changed. I personally believe this was a really unique exercise Mr. Church had his students complete

In Teaching Digital Citizenship which is by a fifth grade teacher in Omaha, Nebraska by the name of Sam Pane. Basically what he talks about is  teaching his class how to be good digital citizens.  This simply means teaching proper behavior and setting appropriate prohibitions. Watching what you post and the things that you share online because later in life you don't want those things to come back and haunt you in future. I think we can learn a number of things from Mr. Pane.

Roosevelt Elementary's PBL just shows you how Project Based Learning is used in the school. These projects are very helpful not only to us as teachers but to our students as well. PBL is something that we will continues to use throughout our career.

                                             Little Kids...Big Potential

After watching the three videos about Ms. Cassidy I began to think.. this lady must really love technology. She used just about every piece of technology she could get her hands including the Nintendo DS. I think this was a really great idea especially in terms of the students learning at the same time.  I also really loved the idea of secure web browsing. My biggest concern with the use of technology in the classroom would be kids abusing the privilege or using it for other purposes rather then learning. Even today for example here at USA , a professor of mine banned the use of technology in her class simply because students would surf twitter, buy clothes, use chat websites during class in stead of using it to learn/take notes. I guess with a group of elementary kids you don't have much to worry about besides playing video games during lecture. I think that using the techniques Ms. Cassidy use for her classroom would be a great way to get the students more involved.

Blog Post #9

I find Project Based Learning for Teachers to be very helpful  for not only myself as a future educator but to others as well.  As future educators PBL seemed to be used a lot in EDM 310 so I'm sure it has a lot to do with our field of study. This resource requires students not only to interact but to create and share their class work with other students and or teachers.

1. A Need to Know- When a student ask questions about that particular subject and or assignment .
2. A Driving Question-Typically an open ended question that make the student think what was the whole purpose for completing this project.
3. Student Voice and Choice- Basically keeps the students interested when  making their own decisions when completing class work/projects.
4.21st Century Skills- This one speaks for itself, teaches our students the skills and techniques of communicating and using technology in today's world.
5.Inquiry and Innovation- Students come up with their own questions answers and conclusion
6.Feedback and Revision- which is basically where each and every student critiques one another's work.
7. A Publicly Presented Product- Students come together and share what they have learned

·         This topic would have to be the one I enjoyed the most. After watching the video I have learned that a simple "Good Job" could go a long way as a teacher.  However, rewarding my students is one of the many things I look forward to when becoming a teacher. I want my students to know that Hey, Good job and they should be praised for following directions and or doing their work.

The next assignment that I chose was" Ten Sites Supporting Digital Classroom Collaboration in Project Based Learning."  This also Plays an important role when using  PBL's and the different type of methods that are used such as…

Titan Pad
Wall Wisher
Coarkboardme
Google Docs
Microsoft Live
Today's Meet
Linoit
Skype In Education and Quick Screen Share

Two Students Solve the problem of Watery Ketchup By Designing A New Cap

This particular video was very interesting to me. These two  high school students were dying to know why water comes out of a ketchup bottle when squeezing it. It's interesting to me because I've always wondered the same thing. The use of PBL helped these guys find out why such a thing happens. This shows that these  guys will go a long way in whatever they do, If you want something out of life don't stop until to reach it no matter what the situation may be.

Blog Post #8

8 years ago, a science professor named Randy Pausch from Carnegie Mellon University left us with a very powerful lecture that inspired a lot of people all over the world. He talked about achieving ones dreams and never giving up. And also that If we want things in life we must work just as hard to get those things. That was the topic that stood out to me the most. I think as future educators we can all learn from Randy Pausch whether it's dealing with everyday things in life or his way of teaching using PBL's which is not only effective but a great way to teach our students other than just going by the lesson plans the state gives us. Another thing that I gathered from this intelligent man is that just because we are in leadership doesn't mean that we know everything. Back to the discussion I had on a previous blog post, there will be times where our students may know things that we don't know. We should let that be a learning process for the both of us.

Project 7 Part B

*Message to Class

 **Message to Parents

Blog Post #7

After watching the assigned videos, I've found them to become very useful for not only me ,but to my fellow classmates as well as future educators. A few things that I believe I will need to work on before I graduate is staying on track. I am a very organized person but I know as a future teacher, it will be tough for some students. Not all students learn at the same pace and that is my main thing is making sure every student understands what is expected of him/her before moving on to the next curriculum. The reason behind that is to stay on track but at the same time no student is left behind. As far as technology wise, I feel that I am very up to date with what technology and resources are being used in the teaching field today.

In the first video, I discovered that both applications are actually very important and easy to navigate especially in today's world. The fact that kindergartners are using iMovie is very interesting to me. Although, I have not used iMovie personally, I think it will be a fun and exciting learning experience for me and for my students.

In this video, Dr. Strange talk to a few teachers here on the gulf coast about how using technology changes the different dynamics of learning. It's no longer us as teachers teaching our students, they also can teach us a few things with today's technology. Mrs. Bennett tells us that Paddlet is one of the most popular websites that is being used today whereas students and or teachers can post questions and just about anyone can respond. She also touched basis on PLN which we discussed a few weeks back in a earlier blog post.

iPad's in the classroom, is one that really shocking to me on how students are succeeding in the classroom. I agree with the use of some technology in the classroom ,but is the iPad really the excuse for looking at teaching and learning? it just seems like to me that this is an excuse to spend more money. Most of the things that these students are learning on these iPad's can be taught by reading the book or by doing hands on activities. But then as you look at it in reality technology has already taken over the minds of our children whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. There's really no way around the use of it now.

In the last video, I overheard that some of the reason why teachers love the use of technology such as  tablets, digital video and video games is because students love it and it engages them while learning. In my opinion It's almost as if there is no need for teachers anymore since technology basically does most of the job. A teacher from Florida stated " Teachers will not be replaced by technology , but teachers who don't use technology will be replaced by those who do. After reading that statement, I guess she has a point, either hop on board or be replaced. Your choice. My goal as a teacher is to use technology throughout the classroom ,but have limitations to it. The use of pulling out your iPad for everything is just not my thing and is not something that my class will use every day.

Blog Post #6

In project based learning part one, Dr. Strange discussed the importance of project based learning with former student of The university of south, Mr. Anthony Capps. Capps also took this very same class that we are enrolled in today and is teaching 3rd grade at Baldwin County Elementary School.   Dr. Strange goes on to ask Mr. Capps a few questions on how does he approach project based learning as a teacher. What I gathered from the video is that the main goal to a good project is to have a good audience, make it exciting, and do hands on activities. Number two is that, students should be aware of what the state expects of them in order to be a successful student. After that, students will then know what is expected of them in Mr. Capps 3rd grade classroom. It's almost as if they both go hand and hand. I find the tool iCurio to be very interesting as well especially for a third grade class. These videos provided lots of helpful information.

Discovery Ed is another toll that can be used to coincide with Project Based Learning. This can be used for social studies or sciences. Not only is Discovery Education useful for students but as well as teachers to find information on different topics. This tool is something that was not offered or as prevalent as it is today but will be very helpful to the students now and generations to come.

Tips for Teachers was very helpful for me and for others especially since we are going to become future educators. One of my main things when I start teaching is to not be afraid to have a little fun with your students. Not only does it grabs their attention but many but it opens up doors for questions, and things of that nature. I think that's what most teachers as I was coming up failed to realize. Yes, it's about getting our education but at the same time kids are more apt  to learn and participate when the teacher is about excited and having fun while teaching whatever the subject may be. Another things is that as we discussed earlier in a blog post, asking more open ended questions to get the answer you need goes a long way.

Use Tech, Don't Teach it taught me a lot of things I wasn’t aware of but one that stuck with me was there is always room for learning. Just because we go through school, get a degree and began teaching doesn’t mean we've learned all that we need to know. There will be times where students will teach me a thing or two I'm sure but let that be a lesson for all of us, as teachers, students , and parents.

C4T Summary

For this week's blog post comments for teachers, I was assigned to Julie Greller. After  reading a few of her blog post I found out some very interesting things. Below I have written a brief summary on what my thoughts were pertaining to her blog post. Also, If I've done it correctly I posted the link directly to that specific blog post in case anyone else would like to read the post.

Julie Greller post a series of things not only to help us a future educators but everyday things such as news, tips, and much more. This week she decided to talk about QR codes. QR codes or in other words known as Quick Response are very popular in today's world. 95% of the population have smart phones, which is where the codes can be read. You can do so by simply downloading the app from Apple Store or The Android Market. Mrs. Julie talks about how helpful these can be for students when they are away from the classroom and even in the classroom if the school allows electronic devices. I find this post to be very helpful to myself and for new beginners who would like to know more about using QR codes.

In this post, Mrs. Greller gives us step by step on how to print multiple PowerPoint slides. This is very important to those who are conservative and likes to save trees. As we all know printing power point slides can use a ton of paper..and ink. Did you know that there was an easier way to combine as many as six slides to one paper? Well if you didn't, now is the time to learn something new. It's very simple and it only take a few clicks. Post like the one I mentioned can be very helpful for students and for teachers. Let's make the world a better environment and Save Our Tress. I've enjoyed reading Mrs. Julies blogs over the past week. If anyone would like to keep up with her, I've included a link directly to her blog. Enjoy!

Blog Post #5

A PLN is a Personal Learning Network or in other words a social and information website used for teachers and future educators.

PLN's can help us a future teachers in many different ways. For one building relationships with other individuals in your field of study. It also allows you to gather/ share information among other teachers. These learning networks are typically formed by teachers and students with similar interest. I had no idea until now what a PLN stood for and surprisingly I've already created my own by using Twitter, Facebook, and many other social groups. The first addition to my group would be to follow and communicate with as many teachers and futures teachers I possibly could.

Project #15

Search Engines

Dogpile.com - Dogpile is one the many search engines that I never really use. Supposedly it saves users time by piling so much information in such little time. This search engine works the same as any other search engine such as Google.

Yahoo.com - Yahoo would be my favorite search engine of all time. It provides you with weather updates, news, etc. Very easy to use and also the 2nd largest search engine in the search directory.

WolframAlpha.com - WolframAlpha is another one I've never heard of until now. The search engines to be very helpful and works as a math tutor in my opinion. I will definitely use this next semester when I'm taking Statistics.

Ask.com - Ask is very much like Google. Type in a question and it gives you an answer or something similar to it. I give ask a rating of 3 out of 5.

Bing.com - Similar to Yahoo in a since ,but Bing gives you a much broader search in what you're looking for. Very easy to use.

Cargurus.com - This website would be useful for finding new and used vehicles. It is very useful and easy to maneuver around. I like using this website because it gives you a larger selection of vehicles in your area as well as others.

Gutenberg.com - This search engine is something I just recently started using when the campus bookstore sold out of the novel i needed for my American Literature class. Gutenberg would be most useful for finding eBooks free on line.

WOW.com - A search engine made by Google, I guess that would mean they would have similar techniques . So it pretty much does the same thing as Google but I don't think It is as popular as google.com.

Asking Questions: What questions do we ask? How do we ask?

After watching the video "Asking Better Questions In The Classroom, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFMfEVdfDys  I've learned that as future educators we must ask more open ended questions in order to get the answer that we're looking for. If you ask a student, is it raining outside? More than likely the answer you're going to get would be yes, no, or I think so. Those would be examples of closed ended questions. Asking open ended questions will not only open up the doors for a discussion between you and that student but also with the entire class.

After watching the video What is Peer Editing? I find it to be very useful and important to not only EDM310 but to any other classes that we may take as well. As future teachers it is imperative that we go behind ourselves and make sure things are spelled correctly, used in the right content, etc. Of course, no one is perfect and we all make mistakes ,but that's when peer editing comes into place. The best way to approach peer editing in my opinion is to use good word choice. One simple word can cause a heap of trouble when peer editing someone else's work. You have to be very careful about not offending anyone ,but at the same time try and give feedback that you feel will be helpful to that person. If you have to seco nd guess yourself about if your feedback will offend someone then you probably should rethink or re word what you were originally going tosay. My main focus when peer editing my classmates in EDM 310 is to start off with some positive feedback. It seems as if positive feedback will make things go much smoother.

Blog Post #2

What Will Teaching in the 21st Century be Like?

  1. During this video, it appears to me the professor Dancealot main focus is to teach his class the basic steps in learning how to dance using Foxtrot, Rumba and many more. The professor doesn't do a very good job at teaching this course in my opinion. Yes, of course he uses a little hands on to demonstrate the different dance techniques but over all everything was lecture, reading directly from a power point slide. Many students learn at different rates and with this being a dance class, spending more time on dancing rather than lecturing would have been very helpful for his class.
  2. What i gathered after watching this video is that Robert's thinks that we as future teachers should come up with something different as to the way we teach our students. He believes that we should teach our kids/students how to use and operate the resources that are available to them such as Google, Microsoft applications and more. Teaching in the 21st century is very much so different than the way things we taught back then. We went from using chalk boards to now using Smart boards and projectors. That doesn't mean don't refer back to the books that were given and solely rely on technology to do the job, because as we all know technology can be very irritating at times. So basically, to sum up what I'm trying to get across is that do whatever it takes as a teacher in the 21st century to help your students be successful in life. Whether, that means using technology, reading the book or even hands on activities.
  3. Today I watched a video called, Network Student by Wendy Drexler. In my opinion I think this was a very interesting video, it goes to show you again how prevalent technology is in our world today. The use of this thing we call technology seems to be very important to today's society but take a minute and think to yourself, What will happen to the students who aren't tech savvy and or not impressed by the way learning takes place in the classrooms today? Will they be forced into using or will they receive a failing grade for not participating in class assignments that deals with technology?
  4. Out of all five videos I've watched over the past few days this one by Vicki Davis would have to be my favorite one. I love the way she refers to her new way of teaching which involves using and and every form of technology out there to teach her class. Not only are they learning from her but she even picks up a few things from the students which makes the class even more interesting. The way this class is setup is how I would like to be with my own classroom in a few years.
  5. After watching this video, This is the first I have ever heard about flipping the classroom. The topic has me a little on the fence side for many different reasons. It is something that I would have to test myself to be able to make a decision. However, I personally do not think this approach will be a very good idea for many students today especially in the Secondary Elementary field of study.

Blog Post #1

According to ratemyprofessors.com, I heard this course turned out to be great if you actually tried and came to class. Honestly, I had no idea on what I  was signing up for I was just told it was a required course for education. Also, If I'm not mistaking there was a different guys name listed as the professor until my first day of class when I found out that he took the semester off. My only fear  is that I will get behind and not be able to catch up. I tend to be a procrastinator when It comes to submitting things online ,but I guess that is something I will have to just work on.  Now that I think about it, I've never taken any classes like EDM 310 so this should be fun and maybe I can learn a thing or two. The most difficult thing in this course for me may be completing the blogs, which seems to be a big factor into your grade. It is definitely something that is going to take some time getting used to that's for sure. The best way for me to the tackle the most difficult aspect of EDM 310 is to ask questions when I am unsure of something and set reminders for myself when things are due. At this time, I do not have any questions but as we progress through the course, I will be sure to ask any questions that I may have.

  • About Me

  • Education
My name is Randy Rayford. I am twenty years old and I was born and raised in a small town called Prattville, AL about 10 miles from the state's capital. I have two sisters Brandi (17) and Miah (14)  surprisingly we are all 3 years apart from one another. I also have a 1 year old puppy named Izzy whom my best friend Josh and I drove almost 10 hrs  to go pick up. I'm a sophomore transfer student from the University of West Georgia . My goal is to major in secondary education and minor in English.

My top favorite things to do would have to be traveling, fishing and having a good time. Living life to the utmost fullest is what keeps me sane.  How I happen to be attending South is a long story but let's just say I moved to Mobile to be closer to my family. I entered the field of education for two main reasons, one is because there Is a demand for male teachers not just in Alabama but all over the United States. Two, is because if you think about it more and more households in America are being run by single mothers. That means some kids don't have that positive father figure and or role model whom they can relate to, I know for one I didn't especially growing up. My father cherished his job and career more than he did family so those are the reasons why I entered the field of education.

When I hear educator's work in the 21st century, I immediately think about technology. It's something that is more prevalent in today's time then when I was growing up or even my mother's childhood for that matter.
